Liposuction slims and reshapes the body through the surgical removal of excess fat deposits.
Liposuction is appropriate if you have trouble reducing fat in certain areas despite exercise or weight loss.
Liposuction can flatten the abdomen, reduce the buttocks, thighs and hips, slim the waist, trim love handles, and reduce fat bulges of the arms, neck and knees. Liposuction is also used in men to reduce excess tissue in the chest.
Liposuction is most commonly performed as an outpatient procedure with discharge home. An overnight recovery may be required if multiple areas are treated, when combined with other procedures, or if large volumes of fat are removed.
Liposuction is commonly performed with local anesthesia infused to the treatment area and with mild sedation. When combined with other procedures, general anesthesia may be recommended.
Recovery may require a day or two away from work and up to a week for bruising to resolve. Light activity may be resumed the day after your surgery. Compression garments are recommended following liposuction to help reduce fluid retention and shape your new curves.
Results can be long-term, but weight loss/gain or pregnancy may alter your appearance.
